The boundaries of mental illness « Mind Hacks.

Interesting article (linked to by @bengoldacre ) about how the experiences of hallucinations etc which are used to diagnose schizophrenia, are actually experienced by a lot more people than are ever diagnosed or are ever ill enough for their life to be affected to the point of disability.  Also, that there is a clear distinction between those who experience these things and those who don’t – there is not a smooth continuum.  Whereas there is a smooth continuum in the case of anxiety.
The conclusion is all about the difficulty of diagnosing mental illness.  It does exist, just science hasn’t caught up to get the evidence.
